Throughout this unit, formative assessments will be the main source of assessment. I want the students to be able to check their own understanding, and feel prepared for the test. This will be accomplished by using their homework and the questions given and asked in class as a way of learning and reviewing the information. The worksheets will all be reviewed, as seen in the lesson plans, in order to ensure each student has the correct information. These six formative assessments will be graded based on completion. The main focus of these assessments is to cultivate learning, not to ensure the students retained the information. The summative assessment will be graded based on correct answers. This unit test will have the students show their learning through multiple choice questions, fill in the blank diagrams and a short answer question that relates the topics to their own life. Together these assessments ensure that the students are following the standards for the topics.
Formative Assessments:
Homework Sheets (listed in each lesson plan)
earths structure
inquiry assessment write up
colored map
two team worksheets (volcanoes vs earthquakes) handed in
chart about earthquakes and volcanoes
create a multiple choice question
Summative Assessment: Test (20 multiple choice, 2 diagrams with fill in blanks, 1 short paragraph answer)
*The Inquiry Assessment could be used as either a formative or a summative assessment, depending on how it is used. The versatility in this activity could be used based on what the students need. For example, if the students are still learning the material when they are doing the activity a formative assessment would be more appropriate. If the students were performing the activity at the end of the unit, however, this assessment could be modified to be a summative assessment.
